What makes this conversion stand out?

  1. Convenience – Everything has been done for you except for the installation itself. You’re not only getting the brackets, but the entire parts purchase list and detailed step by step installation instructions. All the hard work has been done. Plus, you can have everything at your door in a few days!
  2. More bang for your buck – For a bit more money than other outdated brake packages on the market, you get the superior quality of lightweight aluminum Wilwood brake components which consist of an machined hub, new wheel bearings/ races, vented rotors in either 11” or 12.19” diameter, and the huge stopping power of 4-piston aluminum calipers!
  3. Made in the USA.
  4. Everything is Brand New – An exact parts purchase list is included for you to order. All parts are brand new and in stock on the various online stores like Summit Racing, Amazon, Jegs, etc.
  5. Thorough Installation Instructions – A highly detailed assembly manual consisting of 20 pages with photos of every step showing you exactly what to do.
  6. Keep the Speedo! – Keep the stock speedometer system working exactly like it was (which runs the odometer). Seems like a small thing, but trust me, it is not; nobody likes looking at a non functioning speedometer.
  7. Weight Savings – about 15 lbs.
  8. Reversible – The whole conversion is completely reversible if you ever want to go back to stock brakes, although I doubt you will.
  9. Looks sexy – No other way to put it! Especially when you see the caliper peaking through your wheel.

FAQs

What is the total cost?
The total for the Wilwood front disc brake conversion including my brackets ranges from $1400-$1600 depending on what Wilwood options you choose (11” or 12.19” brake rotor, red or black caliper, plain or drilled/slotted rotor). The total also includes new braided brake hoses and fittings. The most popular kit is the red caliper with 12.19″ drilled/ slotted rotor. The recommended upgrade to Wilwood Dual Master Cylinder is an additional $250-$300.

How difficult is it to install?
It is a weekend project that most anyone who wrenches can do it with a basic tool set. For those local to southern CA, there is the option of installation by myself, contact me for more details.

What modifications are required?
This is a bolt on kit. No modifications to the Corvair suspension or spindle are necessary. You can leave the spindle on the car when installing the conversion. The entire kit is completely reversible too if you ever want to go back to stock drum brakes. The one minor modification is to transfer the speedometer guts from the driver’s stock Corvair spindle cap to the Wilwood spindle cap (shown in the instructions).

Will it fit my wheels?
Minimum size wheels are aftermarket 14” wheels – will NOT fit stock Corvair 13” wheels.
The Wilwood 11” rotor kits fit most 14” wheels with 13.04” min inside wheel diameter.
The Wilwood 12.19” rotor kit fits most 15” wheels with 14.10” min inside wheel diameter.

How does it affect the wheels/ track width?
It pushes the wheel out +0.19” (3/16”). This has not created any problems on any of the Corvairs using this conversion thus far. The front wheel studs included in the kit are 1/ 2-20 thread so you will need new wheel nuts for the front. Also, the Wilwood wheel hubs are drilled for both 5×4.75” (stock Corvair bolt pattern) and 5×4.50”.

What about the rest of the brake system and master cylinder?
There are no required changes if you stay with the stock brake lines or stock master cylinder. A good working stock single or dual master cylinder will do the job just fine. For added safety and convenient timing, a dual master cylinder is highly recommended to be installed. Wilwood offers nice units that have been installed and proven; this is my preference.

How tried and true is the system?
With over 40 kits installed domestically and internationally, only positive feedback has been given. They have been on the market and in use for over 8 years. Great performance proven over time and tested for over 30k miles on my personal Corvair.
